Have a question or comment? Then hop on over to the new BW Bass Forum!

Of course nothing beats Talkbass for general bass discussion, but I hate to spam their board talking about my own stuff.

Enjoy!

Edit:

I scrapped the ABG forum when I found that another good ABG-only forum already exists at The Dudepit.

I’ve got a mostly Warmoth J-bass that I cobbed together from e-bay purchases. I’d love to have a very nice ABG. What would the prices run for a 4 string fretless with an unlined fingerboard and a Piezo pickup system…say fishman, or ?
I live in Tacoma…I’d love to see your shop if you are open to tours!
have a great day

Thanks for stopping by!

Pricing is not yet finalized, as I’m still dumping money into development as I go. I hope to keep the base 4-string aroung $1000, though. That base configuration includes a D-Tar Timberline pickup with volume and tone controls.

I should have options and pricing on the site when the first run is completed some time next month.

Currently “the shop” is 50% Warmoth and 50% my home workshop, neither of which are open for tours. :) When I have something you can play I’d be happy to set up a demo someplace local - watch this space for updates!

Since you’re jumping bravely into the world of composites with this ABG, why not some kind of composite fingerboard too (if you haven’t already thought of it, which you may have)? My own ABG is all wood, but it has a composite FB, and I like it.

That’s the Shuker 6, right? Is that a fretless board? Phenolic makes a nice fretless, but I’m not nuts about the expansion differential on wood necks. I’ve heard of phenolic boards overhanging the neck when the humidity goes down and the shaft dries out. Have you ever experienced this?

Brian,

Yeah, that’s a fretless board on the Shuker. Honestly, I never even thought about the differential expansion issue, not being a luthier. The overhang issue wouldn’t seem to arise with my bass, AFAICS, since it’s a set-neck. I do seem to be getting a little “rise” on the part of the FB that’s attached to the body, but AFAIK that’s not something unique to this bass but rather is a sometime problem for acoustic guitars in general. I dunno to what extent that phenomenon on this particular bass might have anything to do with the phenolic.

On another note, I’m curious: what kinds of strings work for you on “Big Red”? I don’t like bronzewounds myself; just makes the instrument sound like a big guitar. Roundwound electric strings have been “meh” for me. I’ve been using T-I Jazz Flats, which are pretty good and durable though seeming to miss a little low-end oomph, but I’m thinking of trying tapewounds. The T-I Acousticores sound interesting, but the tension sounds as if it’s absurdly low, and I dunno how well that would work out.

Right now I have Ernie Ball Earthwood (bronzewound) strings on the redwood bass. They were a bit too zingy for me when I started out, but now that they’re good and dead the bass has a nice mixture of growl and low end.

I’ve also had regular nickel-wounds on it (’meh’ from me, too), and the acousticores. I really like the acousticores, though they’re VERY low tension and roll in a disconcerting way under your fingers. When I had them on I shimmed the neck to raise the action way up so I could get some acoustic volume out of it without rattling. The sound has a nice acoustic “bloom” like an upright, with less sustain, but the high action means less growl.

I’ve played Rick Turner’s Ren 5 basses which use these strings with a 35″ scale, and really liked the sound and feel with the extra tension. I may well make a 35″ conversion neck for one of the new ABG’s so I can make better use of the acousticores.

I’m thinking of using Jazz Flats on my 6 - do you think the lack of oomph you’ve experienced is a tension issue?

It could be partly a tension thing, I guess, and maybe partly just the interaction with that particular bass and this particular player. Actually, the .136 B on the bottom is pretty good, as is the .033 B on top (I tune to BEADGB rather than BEADGC). The .043 G is pretty good too; in fact, both high strings sing absolutely beautifully in medium to high registers. It’s the .058 D that bugs me the most, and to a lesser extent the .100 E; some body seems lacking. The .070 A sounds great but somehow feels less strong than it sounds, if that makes any sense at all.

Addendum: with magnetic PUs, everything I say about the T-I JFs might be different; I’ve only ever used them acoustically or with piezos or contact PUs. I will say that while notably lighter in tension through the middle than most strings, they’re fiarly comfortable to play.
